GOD'S Warning to America

As followers of Christ, we are accountable to God for using all the resources He has entrusted to us for His glory. The questions we must answer are:

  • How are we as a nation using our influence and affluence for the glory of God?

  • Are we exporting positive or negative influences?

  • What does God think of what we are sending to the world over our television and radio waves, in our movies and books, and through our Internet connections?

For 500 years, God has been equipping America with the specific means to accomplish His task of helping to fulfill the Great Commission.  Thus, we must regard these blessings as more than mere gifts for our own personal enjoyment.

It is increasingly obvious that while America’s business stock has peaked internationally, our moral stock is in a free-fall at home. The print and electronic media testify that we have been weighed on the moral scales and found wanting. If we continue on our destructive path, our time for restoring America is very short indeed.

The words of the late Dr. Charles Malik, brilliant former President of the United Nations General Assembly, go to the heart of our dilemma:

Having realized that the whole world is as it were dissolving before our very eyes, it is impossible then to ask more far-reaching questions than these three:  What is then emerging?  Where is Christ in it? And what differences are we making to the whole thing?

The answer is obvious. We are not making the worldwide impact for Christ for which our Founding Fathers dedicated this nation.

Over the last fifty years, the United States of America has reversed its course from a nation where godliness prevailed to a nation that seemingly has no time for God. Our drug/sex/rock culture pervades the whole earth through television and movies, with devastating moral affects, eerily reminding us of the Babylon described in Jeremiah 51:7: “She made the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine; therefore they have now gone mad.”

This moral decay is why we are so concerned about our country. Most Americans have forsaken the principles and moral standards that come from God through His inspired word, the Bible; they have traded absolute truth for a humanistic lie. As a result, the nation is reaping the consequences that flow from our unconfessed sin. As in Babylon, America is having a massive party, drinking to the gods of humanism, secularism, materialism, and atheism.

Listen to this biblical warning given to ancient Israel as they stood poised to enter the Promised Land:

When you have eaten your fill, bless the Lord your God for the good land He has given you.  But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you don’t forget the Lord your God and begin to disobey Him.  For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have become very large, and your silver and gold have multiplied, that is the time to watch out that you don’t become proud and forget the Lord your God.

But if you forget about the Lord your God and worship other gods instead, and follow evil ways, you shall certainly perish, just as the Lord has caused other nations in the past to perish.  That will be your fate, too, if you don’t obey the Lord your God.    -Deuteronomy 8:10-14,19,29 TLB

Friends, this warning to ancient Israel is God’s warning to America today. This is our most critical hour! Make no mistake about it. Despite the outward appearance of economic prosperity, we are watching the internal collapse of an empire unless we take immediate corrective action. Daniel Webster warned:

If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.

Scripture reminds us: “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked” (Luke 12:48).  God expects each of us—having been blessed with peace, with prosperity, with life—to dedicate ourselves unreservedly to the task at hand, to rebuild our moral and spiritual foundation which was built upon the eternal truth of God.  That foundation made America great.  It birthed our nation more than two centuries ago.  If we pay the price, we will lead our nation to a rebirth and gloriously usher in the “Next American Century”!
