Don't Let Fear Win

Fear plagues many in our society today, stopping them dead in their tracks. But fear is nothing new.

The greatest story ever told, the Christmas story, contains several references to fear. Reread the accounts in Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2. Four times in the story God speaks to His people and used the same exact wording: “Do not be afraid.”

He said it first to Zechariah, the priest who “was gripped with fear.” Then He said it to Joseph, the fiancé of Mary. Next, to Mary, the one who would be the mother of our Lord. Finally, He said it to the shepherds on the hillside, “Do not be afraid.”

So what did these people do with their fear? They did exactly what God wanted them to do:

·      The priest completed his time of service.

·      Joseph accepted Mary as his wife even though she was pregnant.

·      Mary carried and gave birth to our Lord Jesus.

·      The shepherds went to Bethlehem just as they’d been told.

That’s the model. When you’re afraid, do exactly what God has called you to do. As you obey, your fear will be replaced with peace and joy.

You can let worries and concerns frighten and enslave you, or you can choose, like those men and women in the Christmas story, to do what God wants you to do. What does He want you to do? Trust Him! Begin right there. Surrender your life to the lordship of Christ. Ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit. By faith, claim the strength you need to obey His Word.

Experience the freedom from fear that God wants you to have. God has not left us without a Resource. The Holy Spirit will help you overcome fear as you place your circumstances in His hands.

Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  -Matthew 6:33,34

Dear friend, what are you afraid of today? What anxious thoughts consume you? There’s no need to be afraid. You can surrender all your anxieties to God—this very moment. He can handle anything. Trust Him and you will have peace.
